A benefit to Stony Brook is its proximity to NYC. On Wednesday, June 17th, the Parker and Alty groups took a trip down the LIRR to partake in the NYU Chemistry and Biology Department's joint Pride Symposium. The vibrant LGBTQ+ community in the NYU Chemistry department began hosting a symposium highlighting the science of queer chemists in June 2024. In celebration of Pride Month, allies and members of the LGBTQ+ community participate in a combination of scientific talks and posters at this now annual symposium.

Dr. Matt Hannigan founded and organized the NYU Pride Symposium in 2024 and 2025. Jill and Matt knew each other through overlap of their A. O. Beckman postdoctoral fellowships. When Jill accepted the position in Long Island, she knew that she would want to bring students to the NYU Pride event. Thanks to Matt's invitation, the Parker and Alty groups were able to participate in this year's NYU Pride symposium.

Nicknamed the Par-ty Group, the Parker and Alty groups both reside on the 6th floor of the Chemistry building, do synthetic chemistry at the interface of biology, and are smaller in size (at the moment). This connection lends itself to great group camaraderie. Pictured below are those who attended NYU Pride with Prof. Matt Parker and Jill: Jonathan, Jacob, Jocelyn, Sasha, and LJ (from left to right).
